Shepherd Compello continues to support Ruben Hage as he embarks on the next phase of his racing career

6th March 2023

Having supported 17-year-old Ruben Hage during his first season of racing at senior level in 2022, Shepherd Compello Motorsport Insurance is pleased to announce that it will continue its association with the aspiring teenager in 2023, as he progresses his career to the next stage.

Following a year in the ultra-competitive Ginetta G5 Challenge against a field of more than 20 drivers - all in identical G40 GT5 space-framed sportscars - Ruben rose to the challenge with a top-five finish in his first outing followed by string of top-10 results and podium visits. This year he takes the next step with a full season driving a new Ginetta G56 Pro in the Ginetta GT Championship.

By competing in a campaign that features cars built to exactly the same specification, the parity of performance means the emphasis for success is firmly placed with the driver and team, rather than the car itself. Ruben’s Ginetta will be prepared and run by Breakell Racing, an experienced team that supports front-running drivers competing in a range of high-profile GT and sportscar championships in the UK and Europe.

As many racers do, Ruben began his motorsport journey in Karts, where he honed the art of race-craft and wheel-to-wheel competition. Then, to further develop his car control skills, Ruben entered a series of Autograss events, a form of motorsport that takes place on loose-surface oval tracks. Having achieved a number of podium results, he progressed to the ‘proper’ circuits for a season in the Junior Saloon Car Championship, where he also found himself finishing in the top three places.

In recognition of his achievements, winning British Touring Car Championship team Power Maxed Racing awarded Ruben a place on their prestigious ‘One to Watch’ programme in 2020.

Focussing on the Junior Saloon Car Championship for 2021, a season that has been described as the most competitive ever, the title went down to the final round when Ruben’s impressive fourth-place finish affirmed his ability and confirmed the decision to progress to senior level in 2022.

Looking ahead to 2023 Ruben said: “I’m hugely excited to be stepping up to a new challenge this year, as I make my Ginetta GT Championship debut in a brand-new car.

“2022 was a real learning curve for me and I was delighted to secure sixth place at the end of the season amongst such a competitive grid. I’m looking forward to building on the success from last year and competing with Shepherd Compello, Breakell Racing and my other supporting partners beside me.”

Ben Willoughby, Motorsport Underwriter for Shepherd Compello Motorsport Insurance, is pleased the association with Ruben is continuing this season and said: “As keen supporters of rising talent, we are delighted to continue as a partner sponsor for Ruben this year as he sets his sights on the next stage of his motorsport career and the Ginetta GT5 Championship.

“From what we’ve seen, it looks like it’s going to be an extremely competitive season. We therefore look forward to watching Ruben’s progress with interest and wish him well in his quest for the title.”

The new-for-2023 Ginetta GT Championship comprises 16 races that take place over eight event weekends. The field is split into two classes, GT Pro and GT5, exclusively for Ginetta’s G56 GTP, a car that also makes its debut this season.
